AI resume tailoring: change the emphasis, never the facts

Same experience, different job, different story to tell. AI resume tailoring does the reshuffling in minutes. Your job is to make sure every line is still true. Here’s the workflow.

1. Keep one master resume

Start with a master version you have checked: roles, employers, dates, responsibilities, education, results. Tailor a copy for each job, never the master. When a rewrite sounds great but no longer means the same thing, you have a way back.

2. Read the offer like a list of questions

What will this person actually do? What is required, and what is just nice to have? Use the posting’s own priorities. And skip the employer’s marketing: “fast-paced environment” doesn’t mean you need a line about thriving under pressure.

3. Tailor resume to job description, requirement by requirement

Connect each requirement in the offer to something you have done. Here’s a fictional product designer:

Fictional example: offer to experience
The offer asks forYour experienceWhat to do
Better onboardingRedesigned onboarding with product and engineeringMove it to the top.
Reusable componentsBuilt a pattern library used across four productsKeep the scope: four products.
Team managementNothing in your historyLeave it out. Don’t invent it.

4. Review AI resume tailoring changes line by line

Look at the old sentence, the new one and the reason for the change. Keep edits that sharpen emphasis. Reject new employers, inflated titles, invented numbers and skills borrowed from the posting.

“Built a library used across four products” is true. “Transformed design operations and doubled productivity” is fiction with good posture. That’s also the trap with any resume keyword optimizer: matching words is easy, matching facts is the point.

5. Make the cover letter tell the same story

Use the same examples in your letter, but explain why they matter instead of repeating the resume. Titles, dates and scope must match across both documents.

Twoweeks, our product, is built for exactly this: paste the offer, choose your CV, and it drafts the tailored resume and the letter from the same experience, with each line traceable to its source. The method works in any editor, though.

6. Check the file you will actually send

Open the export. Check the section order and page breaks, and name the file after the role. Keep a copy next to the saved offer. Resume tailoring is done when the document is relevant, readable and true, not when it holds the most keywords.

Fair questions

Do I need a new resume for every job?

No. Keep one master and adjust the emphasis where the role really differs. The facts stay the same.

Can I list a skill I’m still learning?

Yes, if you say so. “Learning SQL (online course, 2026)” is honest. Listing it as professional experience isn’t.
