The best ATS resume checker tells you why, not just how much

You ran your resume through a checker and got 62%. Now what? The best ATS resume checker is the one that explains the number: what it could read, what it matched, and what to fix first.

One score, three different questions

An applicant tracking system (ATS) is the software employers use to manage applications. An ATS resume checker is a separate tool that tries to predict how your resume will fare. Good ones answer three questions: can the text be read cleanly, does it match this role, and is the writing clear?

Those are different problems. A resume can parse perfectly and still not explain why you fit. It can list every keyword and still be a mess to read.

Finding the best ATS resume checker for you

Jobscan is the specialist: its scanner compares your resume with a job description and shows a match report. Pick it if keyword fit for one posting is your main worry.

Teal builds resume analysis into its resume builder, and Huntr offers a resume checker alongside its job tracker. Pick them if you want checking inside a wider toolkit.

Twoweeks, our product, checks how applicant tracking systems read your CV while it drafts your tailored resume and cover letter. Pick it if you would rather fix the document than chase the number.

Fix readability first

The support docs of Greenhouse, an ATS, list columns, complex tables, images, and contact details in headers or text boxes as possible causes of parsing problems. That doesn’t mean every designed resume fails everywhere. It does mean simple layouts are the safer bet.

Quick test: copy the text from your PDF into a plain text editor. Is your email intact? Is each job title next to the right employer? Are the dates in order? If not, fix that before anything else.

How to read your resume ATS score

Treat a resume ATS score as a to-do list, not a grade. There is no universal pass mark, and scores from different tools are not comparable.

If the checker flags “stakeholder management” and you have spent years coordinating with clients and product teams, say so in those words. If it flags a certification you don’t hold, leave it out. Adding it won’t make it true.

Is a free ATS resume checker good enough?

Often, yes, for a first pass. A free ATS resume checker will usually catch layout problems and obvious keyword gaps. Before uploading, check what the free tier includes and how the service handles your personal data.

Know when to stop

Stop when your resume is readable, relevant and true, not when every meter turns green. If a suggestion makes a sentence clunkier or less honest, skip it. A person reads your resume in the end.

Fair questions

Is 80% a good ATS score?

There is no universal target. Each tool scores differently, so read the feedback behind the number instead of chasing a percentage.

Should I remove all design from my resume?

Not necessarily. Keep it clean, avoid putting key details in headers or text boxes, and follow the employer’s instructions. Then test the actual file.
